  1. When Rosa’s book is so incredibly interesting that it’s hard to put down. It’s packed with enough insight and interesting facts that professionals will also find much new and exciting here. Unlike energy texts targeted a general audience, aims this one tall, pale junior or senior engineering or physical science majors. (The only comparable text which I know is Gilbert Masters’ “Renewable and Efficient Electric Power Systems.” Masters and da Rosa, both emeriti faculty at Stanford.) From the TOC:

    Ch . 1 generalities
Ch. 2 Minimum Thermodynamics and kinetic theory of gases
    CH. 3 Mechanical combustion engine
Ch. 4 Ocean thermal energy converters
    Ch. 5 Thermoelectricity
    Ch. 6 Thermionic
    Ch. 7 AMTEC
    Ch. 8 Radio-noise generators
    Ch. 9 Fuel
    Ch. 10 Hydrogen production
    Ch. 11 Hydrogen storage
    Ch. 12 Solar radiation
    Ch. 13 Biomass
    Ch. 14 Photovoltaic inverters

Non-majors have several very well-written alternatives to choose from:

Energy: Its Use and the Environment, Hinrichs and Klein Bach 4th, 2006, ISBN 0495010855

Energy: physical, environmental and social impacts, Aubrecht, 3rd, 2005, ISBN 0130932221

Energy Systems and Sustainability, Boyle / Everett / Ramage, 2003, ISBN 0199261792

Potential disadvantages of the last book for American audiences is the lack of end-of-chapter questions and exercises and a natural bias towards British examples .
